My children, Taylor and Ryan, are two of my greatest accomplishments. Not only have they taught me patience, time management and organization, they have also taught me to never give up on my dreams. They have also taught me to never back down from a challenge no matter how hard that challenge may be. Without their love and support I would not be where I am today.

In “Federal Worker Gets His Job Back,” Denise Lubin agrees with the Fairness Board’s decision to reinstate Franklin Andrews, a long time civil servant, despite the amount of time he spent each day surfing the internet for pornography. Lublin blames Andrews’ supervisors for not noticing what he was doing during the day with his time while at work. According to Andrews, nothing in his contrast stated he could not use government computers and his time to surf for pornography. Although Lublin is correct to lay some blame with his supervisors, it is not right that he was reinstated to his position. Because he is a long-term employee and civil servant, not only does he have a responsibility to taxpayers he also has a responsibility to newer younger employees as well as to his supervisors.
As a civil servant Andrews is wasting taxpayer’s money. His wages come from a portion of the Canadian taxpayers’ wages, who trust that all civil servants are doing the important work that needs to be done for the government and not wasting it by spending time surfing the internet, It is his responsibility to manage his time more effectively. If he has six hours a day to surf the internet for pornography, he is only spending two hours a day on actual work in relation to his job. He argued that his contract did not state “that he could not use government computers and time to porn-surf.” What was the problem if all his work was completed? The problem is, as a senior employee he has the responsibility to seek out more work from his supervisors, or offer to help fellow employees with their tasks. Andrews had held his position for two decades; therefore, he has a responsibility to newer employees and his supervisors. After 20 years of service, he has become a trusted employee who should not require as much supervision as a newer employee. He also needs to set an example to newer, younger employees about what is proper in the workplace. An employee, whether a civil servant or not, should not have their job reinstated for improper use of workplace computers. Although the employer does have a responsibility to supervise employees, the employee has the ultimate responsibility to the employer to not waste company money and time, set an example for newer employees by showing initiative to guide them with their tasks or by asking the supervisor for work to fill the day. |
